This position is unique in two ways. First, True Link’s regulatory ambit is much larger than almost any company of its size. We have the standard card-issuer oversight (OCC, CFPB, FDIC, OFAC, FINRA, PCI, GLBA) and the standard investment advisor oversight (SEC) and money transmitter rules, but also handle HIPAA-covered data (addressing medical situations such as addiction and disability), carefully track the Social Security Administration’s POMS and other eligibility rules because many of our customers are public benefits recipients, are actively engaged in issues around power of attorney and conservatorship, work closely with ABLE Act programs, and have an ambitious product roadmap that includes credit and insurance products that will open new areas of regulation. It’s more than anyone can be an expert in.
Second, True Link thinks of legal / regulatory / compliance excellence as a strategic advantage rather than a business-slowing chore. It’s because we’re more sophisticated about issues from power of attorney abuse to identity verification that we’re able to offer our unique product to vulnerable seniors. It’s because we understand the POMS so well that we’re able to give public benefits recipients such a unique source of independence. It’s because we understand HIPAA so well that we’re able to work hand in glove with rehab centers to help their patients on the road to recovery. So we are looking for someone who is excited to put together the puzzle pieces and invent something new – someone who sees the legal function as a way to solve problems rather than to throw up barriers.
This is a unique opportunity for someone with a big vision about what can be accomplished at a mission-driven financial services company, who wants to help achieve that vision by analyzing and executing on important, complex legal, contractual, regulatory, and compliance matters to advance our growth.
You will work directly with every team at the company: engineering, card and investment operations, customer support, business operations, and people operations to ensure that we achieve our goals. The focus of this role is developing and enacting processes ensure our financial products comply with applicable financial, customer support, marketing, privacy and security laws, regulations, and best practices. This is a chance to address novel, complex regulatory issues, and provide rapid, creative, and compliant solutions.
Who you are:
Financial services expert – You have a firm understanding of financial services and the complexities involved with operating in a highly regulated environment. While not an expert on all disciplines, you are comfortable enough with the regulatory frameworks to be able to figure things out quickly.
Critical thinker – You can navigate your way through a complex landscape, focusing on the key opportunities and points of failure, without letting the details cause you to lose sight of the ultimate goals.
Problem solver - You carefully understand the business objectives of each initiative and participate in finding solutions, rather than simply saying what can or can’t be done.
Relationship builder – The job relies on trust. You build meaningful relationships with partners, regulators, and the internal team. All parties know they can trust you to meet their needs, execute from a place of deep expertise, communicate respectfully and honestly, and take a balanced approach to forming conclusions.
Negotiator and advocate – The easiest answer isn't always the best one. Your job here is not to be a people-pleaser but to arrive at and defend the best answer. You are firm and creative – devising a solution that is a win for everyone. You don’t let ego get in the way of finding the best outcome for the business.
Intellectually curious – You are a continuous learner and love the challenge of taking on unfamiliar tasks. Emerging trends and technologies excite you, and you enjoy understanding more about their origins, applications and possibilities.
“Hands-on”leader – You are an outstanding individual contributor as well as a manager and leader. You like digging into the details and take pride in producing excellent work products, especially policies, procedures, and controls.
